Why “5pm EST” can mean a different date for you

A deadline given in one zone can land on a different calendar day in yours. Eastern Standard Time is UTC minus 5 in winter, and Eastern Daylight Time is UTC minus 4 in summer, so the first thing to confirm is which one applies on the date in question.

For someone in India (UTC+5:30), 5:00 PM EST is 3:30 AM the next day. For someone on the US West Coast, the same deadline is 2:00 PM the same day. For someone in London, it's 10:00 PM that evening. The further east you are, the more likely a US-evening deadline crosses midnight into your tomorrow, which is exactly the trap the day-shift warning catches.

London

If a result ever looks an hour off, daylight saving is usually why. Eastern Time is EST in winter and EDT in summer, and the US switches on different dates than Europe, so the same phrase can resolve differently depending on the week.
